The Linbeck approach to safety is managed through two parallel programs that support and reinforce each other.  One focuses on site conditions with all the elements of a typical safety program:  a Safety Manual, PHAs, site-specific plans, toolbox safety meetings and the like.  The other, Behavior Based Safety (BBS), focuses on changing worker behaviors and promotes safe actions through training, observation and feedback.  Each aspect compliments the other.  Taken together, they are incredibly strong.

Our overall approach to safety has four key elements:

Company Commitment.  Safety is a founding Guiding Principle for Linbeck.  Our annual safety goals are spelled out in the company business plan, and our CEO and other senior managers actively encourage and promote the goals, and celebrate outcomes and achievements.

Employee Involvement.  Our safety program is a bottom-up, top-down program.  Employees in the field take ownership for program design and implementation, while senior management incentivizes, monitors and endorses safety performance and successes.  Communication is open and bi-directional.

Subcontractor Participation.  Trade partners are active participants.  They are trained on the principles and processes of Linbeck’s safety program and encouraged to participate in its execution on jobsites.

Accountability.  We set goals.  We observe and document conditions and behaviors.  We report results company-wide.  And we tie individual performance ratings and compensation to safety results—for all employees. 

We are proud of our safety metrics.  Our performance continues to improve each year. From December of 2002 to today, we have seen a 70% improvement in our W/C modifier.  We credit BBS for these outcomes.  But for us, safety is about so much more than the numbers.  It is about changing the culture of the organization and employees to get everyone home safely to their families at the end of each and every day.
