Overview
The Houston Museum of Natural Science Expansion created much needed space for both permanent and traveling exhibits for one of the city’s top museums. Boasting an exterior of Mexican limestone, aluminum composite panels, and cement plaster, the cast-in-place concrete structure totals five levels (one basement and four above grade) and includes a new central plant, truck dock, delivery drive, and MEP systems to service the existing building. For the basement level, Linbeck added 20 classrooms and a support space, while on the upper levels, the team created room for traveling exhibits, shell space for future exhibits, and, most notably, the museum’s Paleontology Hall and overlook (housed on the first and second levels).The Paleontology Hall features a polished concrete floor to carry on the museum’s simple design, as well as black walls and ceilings to complement exhibit lighting.
