Description
The Abilene Heritage Square project consists of the redevelopment of 8-acres that was formerly the home to the Abilene High School and Lincoln Middle School campus. The existing site includes four buildings, a 1923 academic building, a 1929 gymnasium, a 1950 former industrial arts classroom, as well as a 1974 girls’ gymnasium. The historic buildings from the 1920s will be renovated, preserving their historic facades and include a 700-seat auditorium/performance hall. The girls’ gym will be renovated for a children’s STEM museum/discovery center and host traveling exhibits as well as provide gallery space. The 1950s building will be renovated for a multi-purpose meeting/events facility. New construction, sensitive to the historic structures, will be added and create space for a public library and coffee/retail space. Outdoor space will support future events as an outdoor venue. Together, the campus will be a contemporary learning center for Abilene and become a “living room” of the community.
