Overview

The Brockman Hall for Opera (Brockman) is a European-style opera house and teaching facility for the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Designed by Allan Greenberg, the LEED Silver facility sits on a five-acre lot and features a 600-seat opera chamber, two rehearsal halls, 25 practice rooms and teaching studios, and a production suite with two dressing rooms. Brockman was built with strict attention to acoustical requirements, a key accomplishment that will help the building fulfill its role as a state-of-the-art music center. The exterior of the opera house is a striking display of meticulous design and craftsmanship. With more than 550,000 handmade bricks laid in seven varying patterns with 12,810 cubic feet of cast stone, the ornate façade was successfully delivered by Linbeck’s implementation of an extensive shop drawing and coordination process.
