Description
The roof replacement at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Amon Carter) was a critical update for one of Fort Worth’s premier art institutions. Stretching from the historic 1961 structure to its 2001 expansion—also constructed by Linbeck—this project required removing existing modified bitumen (mod bit) roofing, replacing it with new thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing, and constructing an enclosed cover over an existing mechanical pit. A seemingly simple project, this update required careful planning to protect and preserve the museum’s priceless collections. Noise, vibration, water intrusion, and exhibition timing were among the many factors that were coordinated. In addition to the roof replacement, Linbeck refreshed the Amon Carter’s rooftop skylight (the Lantern) to better highlight Gabriel Dawe’s “Plexus no. 34” installation in the atrium below, replacing the curved standing seam metal roofing and applying a fresh coat of paint on the atrium ceiling.
