Overview
James Turrell’s one-of-a-kind art installation, “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace, is a distinctive feature on the Rice University campus. The stand-alone pyramidal structure is composed of grass, concrete, stone, and composite steel, and illuminates a sequence of bright colors during the early morning and late evening hours. The installation consists of upper and lower viewing areas, a raised viewing surface, a “knife edge” perimeter, and interior viewing oculus. This oculous creates rich, varied experiences for visitors, as incoming sunlight changes and shifts throughout the day. While its location is central to the Rice University campus, the impact of the “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace reaches far beyond the university gates. Adventurers from across the city seek out Turrell’s work of art to take advantage of its tranquil and reflective environment.
